Project Management
- The main job of a project manager in an agency is managing client’s expectations.
- Must have great communication skills.
- Always deliver the information clearly when using written communication.
- You must deliver straight forward information when a project is delayed or impacted.
- If a project is impacted by something you did, you can say “I’m sorry. I made a mistake.” Then make sure you follow up with how you are going to fix it and when it will be delivered.
- Show that you are accountable. If you (or somebody on the team made a mistake) fix it.
- You need to have the soft skills when managing people on a project.
- Get the developers involved early in the project to make sure you can deliver on time and within budget.
- Have a clear Statement of Work or Proposal before beginning client work.
- Break your project down by milestones that reflect payment points.
- Be Organized. Keep everything in one place.
Business Practices
- Make your sure you get out there so that people know your skills and who your are.
- Work at promoting yourself as someone with unique ideas.
- Network through WordCamps and other conferences like Pressnomics.
- Build relationships with people.
- Build a portfolio to show your specific skill set that reflects the type of work you want to do.
